How futures contracts work
- A perpetual contract has no expiry date and tracks the coin's price, but you do not own the coin. You earn on a rise (long) and on a fall (short), and the result is paid out in USDT.
- The deposit is the position value divided by the leverage. With 10× leverage, a drop of about 10% against you wipes out the deposit. The maximum leverage here is 10× for this coin.
- Isolated margin can only lose the deposit of that position. Cross uses the whole futures account as collateral, so one bad position can wipe out all cross positions.
- The mark price is calculated from several sources and jumps around less than the last trade. Result and liquidation are calculated from it, while orders are triggered by the last price.
- Liquidation closes the position when the deposit, together with the result, falls to the required maintenance margin (0.5% to 2.5% of the value). The check also looks at one-minute candles, so even a brief spike can trigger it.
- The funding rate is the real rate from OKX. Longs pay shorts when it is positive, and shorts pay longs when it is negative, and only if the position is open at the moment of payment. On the exchange the rate keeps changing until the payment itself.
- The order book, trades and prices come live from OKX, but orders do not go to the exchange. A limit is only filled once the price moves through it. Real execution may differ, and maintenance thresholds are simplified. A result in the demo does not guarantee a result on the real market.
